Nangma Valley is situated in the northern region of the Gilgit Baltistan province of the country. It lies in proximity to another popular tourist destination - Skardu. Often referred to as the gateway to some of the world’s highest mountains, it serves as a launching point too. 

Travelers looking to visit Nangma Valley head up to Skardu first and then journey from there. The valley is part of the larger Shigar District. This area is known for its picturesque scenery, historical significance, and tourist activity.

Even though it lies so close to a frequently visited tourist spot, it is not remotely as well known. However, this factor makes it more endearing to many avid travelers. They seek this place because it is uninhibited, which offers a more peaceful experience.

• Local Villages and Hospitality

The small villages in Nangma Valley are scattered throughout the landscape. Visiting them provides a chance to experience the local culture up close. The people of Nangma Valley are known for their hospitality. Though there are many local guesthouses in the Nangma Valley, the locals welcome tourists in their homes. There, they share traditional meals. These include balay (a type of flatbread) and tsampa (a flour-based dish).

The homes in these villages are typically made of stone, with flat roofs designed to withstand the harsh winters. Many families also keep livestock, including yaks and goats. They are a source of milk, wool, and meat. In the summer months, the villagers move to higher altitudes with their animals to graze in the meadows.

The people of Nangma Valley celebrate several local festivals throughout the year. The most prominent of those is the Shandur Polo Festival held annually in nearby Shandur. During this event, local communities come together to showcase their skills in polo.

Though it offers something unique in all seasons, the best time to visit it is definitely during the summers. During this time, the weather is considerably milder and the roads are accessible. Moreover, the Nangma Valley is lush and green in this period and meadows are in full bloom. 

Having said that, if winter sports is a tourist’s jam, then visiting between November to March is preferable. Though the place remains the same, the experience of the two tourists would be extremely different. The snow capped peaks and winter sports make for a unique and enjoyable time.
